What’s up with Men’s Lacrosse???

Post by finpxz1 »

Admittedly I know nothing about lacrosse, but wondering from some of the board experts what’s up with the program. As an outsider looking in, it sure looked like Delucca was doing a nice job with the men’s program. We were a whisper away from upsetting #1 Duke in the NCAA Tournament just 3 years ago. Then barely above .500 last year, and the wheels have apparently completely fallen off this season. We aren’t just losing these games, but we are being completely dominated…at least on paper. I’m assuming NIL is part of the problem with so many resources being focused on football?

Just search for LILax's recent posts...those posts will tell you what is going on with UD's men's lacrosse.

In basketball terms, we need some quick point guards to break the press, distribute the ball on offense and shoot the ball well.
It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.

With extra emphasis on "shoot the ball well". I have to imagine, as a team, we are one of the worst in the nation in our percentage of shots being shots on goal.

They're too busy making videos of them getting their asses beat instead of actually winning https://www.facebook.com/reel/2082274795962506

Seriously it's every game we don't need to see twice that they lost especially when we're getting blown out, like what are we doing? Is there no common sense with anyone??

Football doesn't do this, the basketballs dont do this for losses, no other sports at Delaware do this, why are we highlighting that are lacrosse team keeps getting blown out

Why are priorities not elsewhere

I just did a quick run down of the national team stats ytd - clearing percentage = 69th out of 75 teams, face-off percentage = 71 of 75, and shooting percentage = 74 of 75 at 20.4%. YIKES!!!

This team needs a talent injection and better discipline.

As others have said poor on goal accuracy without backups to retain possession is bad lax IQ.

So talent of course helps, but this is not a good team. A big step back for Deluca this year but I have confident he will turn this around next year and grind a couple wins before seasons end.

As for the constant videos, it’s this generation. Blame the parents a bit for the participation trophy generation. This team should be embarrassed UD lax deserves better representation.

A question for those with some inside knowledge on the program -- what has happened to our Canadian "pipeline" we've had so much success with up until recently?

As insane as it sounds, money is being spent in some fashion to put this stuff together (personnel, editing, cameras, etc.). Put that back into Lax NIL or equipment or training or Gatorade buckets. Literally anything.

 Wow...I thought we lost the Richmond game. If only I had watched the video, I'd have known we dominated the Spiders.

First place and undefeated in the A-10!!!

The updated numbers are actually a bit worse from the shooting %. The Hens shooting % is 19.3 (hard to believe that there is one team worse - UMBC). The reason for this abysmal shooting percentage is the fact that most of the shots the Hens take this year are forced shots. Similar to last year, the Hens simply do not have the speed, strength or athleticism to beat a defender one on one. The Richmond announcer (former Virginia Head coach Dom Starsia) said it during the broadcast. "It is very difficult to get good scoring opportunities when you don't beat your man one on one." It is the only way to get the defenders to slide and open good shooting opportunities. Lacrosse offense 101.

It is amazing to think that 99% of the scoring returned from last year (155 of 158 goals) on 26% shooting (which was still way below average) and they have actually gotten worse with experience.

The worst stat is one that doesn't even register in NCAA stats. The Hens man-up offense is 0 for 15. The zero percentage puts them dead last but does not show up. Interestingly, Georgetown(1-9) Princeton (1-6) and Maryland (2-12) all show up in the bottom 5. Average for D1 is about 37% success rate.

You can only hope that DeLuca will give some younger guys opportunities during the rest of the season. Win 4 games in conference, get more experience and squeak into the Atlantic 10 tourney. Take it from there.

Maybe a current & future problem is that UD possibly doesn't compare well to many Div I Lax teams in term of number of schollies & NIL $?

From Inside Lacrosse (no mention of the injuries):

Delaware
The Blue Hens' first season in the Atlantic 10 hasn't been kind to them, particularly out of conference. They're 2-7 and while their recent win vs. Binghamton put an end to a seven-game skid, it's unlikely they'll get the wins needed to keep Ben DeLuca's seven-year streak of winning seasons intact. Face-off and possession troubles early in the season, lackluster offensive production (including a one-goal game vs. Drexel), and a goalie change has yet to right the ship. Consider it unlikely the 0-2 A-10 Hens will make the top four seeds to the conference tournament.
