Spring ball

Our Hens are in pretty good shape heading into the spring especially offensively.

Looking forward to seeing who comes out on top to claim the 2 open spots on the OL. I think one will go to Mustafa but time will tell.
I really would love to see a few of our young receivers completely shine this spring and put some pressure on the incoming transfers for that playing time.

Defensively. Well we need to see some improvement there but a solid nucleus coming back to provide the foundation for improvement.

I have always been of the opinion that more publicity is good for ticket sales. And I have never understood why Carty doesn't do more to build interest in the football team. He should realize that this is our team and we are interested all year not just with his post game interviews. If at the very least the press should have more access.

Even if the Blue Hens would just have 1 or two player interviews a week of the goings on of spring practice from both established starters and a few featured transfers to get some buzz on the program out there.

Lots of intriguing story lines here this spring. From the usual positional battles for open spots, The younger players who are stepping up. We have multiple new coaches they could highlight. And the transfers how their Hen experience is goin and what's better about being a Hen.

To be a few weeks in spring practice had have relatively no info coming out is driving me nuts. The football off season is loooong enough. I know other Hen Fans like myself would like a little off season bump in Blue Hen Football Talk.

Ive mentioned the mind numbing approach of minimal team coverage as an issue to Rawak, Carty and Jordan. I certainly don't expect them to listen to just me but they all seemed content with the current way of having a tight ship and buttoned down. I agree with 72. The more coverage, the more interest and keep the Juices flowing.

When KC was our coach he granted me permission to interview the players and coaches. I interviewed 25 to 30 players and 3 or 4 of the coaches. Also had a nice interview with Jerry O. Maybe a few of the old-timers remember. HensRock did a great job as my editor and used some special effects on the printed interview. I still have the tapes of some of the interviews. How the Delaware football world has changed. Keeler was very willing and very approachable.

Not that I care about details of what K.C.is doing at Temple now, but how is Temple handling information compared to us?

I agree that we are getting nothing from UD, which why I so appreciate Big R's interviews with J.S.

And for all that Dave Brock did that turned people off, he was not shy about promoting UD Football. Maybe some of you remember the evening GoHens meetings we would hold occasionally in the Carpenter Club room at the Bob, where I would be the moderator and he would answer questions for an hour or more. We always had a good turnout for those. He enjoyed the back-and-forth and I think most of us did as well (especially Joe C.)
He also was a proponent of making practices open to anyone who wanted to come watch. Fans would have to stay in certain areas, but still had a good view of most of the practices. The media could move around freely and often mingle with other visitors who I would refer to as VIPs.
I remember, in particular, one day at practice just hanging out with UD Royalty - Ted Kempski and Rudy Carpenter. Ted regaled us with a number of stories that had us howling with laughter. Brock also brought in GB Packer legend Jordy Nelson, whom he had coached at Kansas State.
Now, maybe the current staff would respond “Yeah, and look where that got him!”, but it certainly kept the fan base happy and informed and I really don’t think that had much impact on the results on game day.

Those Gohens nights with Brock were awesome Rich. Joe C was in his element. If I recall correctly, Brock took an instant liking to Joe. Have you ever approached the possibility of doing a Gohens session with RC, or do you know the answer would be a definite no way? I personally don’t have an issue with practice being off limits as long as we’re winning. I spoke to an insider with the program recently and he said a big reason why many schools are moving to closed practices and no spring game is because doing so would give other schools more video to use when evaluating possible future portal targets.

Those GOHENS sessions were so interesting and valuable and a great way for Coach to be engaged with fans. Brock loved doing them and the fan turnout was impressive each time. I would go with and sit with Joe C at those and he would work up questions for Brock beforehand for those sessions along with the regular TD CLUB lunch meetings. Joe's Football IQ was off the charts and Brock respected that.

Back then you could also attend practices which Joe and I would do. Brock would always come over to us and speak with us for 5 minutes or so with Joe telling Coach what he was doing wrong! We were on the WP sidelines of a Smyrna @ Willam Penn HS playoff game back when Henderson and Knight were playing and Brock came to scout some players and saw us there and stood with us for 30 minutes. The conversations on Football and technique were priceless.

I don't think it hurt anything or anyone to be Open like Brock and even Keeler were. Carty has a different approach and we have to accept it. Not sure what it gains him and I truly believe he is missing an opportunity with the fanbase especially at a time where he stepped in after Rocco. His decision this Spring not to speak to the media until the End of Spring practice to me is just hard to understand.

Of course, winning is the most important thing. But all this stuff matters for a variety of reasons. To have the second FBS spring practice going on at UD, and almost zero media coverage or information coming out of it is ridiculous. With that said, it looks like season ticket holders and donors got an invite to attend a practice session. So there is at least that.
