St. John's

Post by Cluck U »

Hens play at St. John's today at 1pm.

Game is on ESPN+.

St. John's lost 17-10 in its opener against NJIT. The game was moved to Sunday due to the weather and was played indoors at Mount Olive High School in Flanders, N.J.

St John's was predicted to finish 6th (last) in the Big East in their preseason poll, but they do have a preseason all-conference player in Adrian Nowak. "Last season, the redshirt junior surpassed the 40-point mark, recording 24 goals and 20 assists while starting all 15 games."

The St. John's lacrosse team will host Delaware on Valentine's Day at Cox Family Field, aiming for its first-ever victory against the Blue Hens. The match follows a season-opening loss to NJIT, where standout performances came from redshirt freshman Noah Plenn and All-BIG EAST selection Adrian Nowak. The game also pays tribute to former Siena Head Coach Liam Gleason, featuring LG lapel pins worn by St. John's staff. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

By the Numbers
Noah Plenn recorded four goals and two assists in his collegiate debut.
St. John's converted 3 out of 3 extra-man opportunities in their season opener.

Hoping our Hens can rebound from a couple poor performances and get some mojo back.

Hens have one more road game against Penn on the 21st before their next home game against Villanova on the 28th.

Massive struggles in every phase continue against a very mediocre St John’s squad. 10-10. This is tough to watch

St John’s Noah Plenn was on our roster last year. From the stats view his potentially tying shot with 8 seconds left hit the post.

Real nail biter. I was convinced St Johns was going to score and tie it up. Looking forward to LI’s assessment to get some answers here.

Watched some in the early 2nd quarter and Hens were up 8-3. Figured it was a cinch so I went to enjoy some of the warm weather outside. Gonna be a tough year.

I like to stay away from negativity when it comes to discussing these college kids representing UD. So I will just say that the coaches will have a lot to work on this week.

The clearing is a real problem for this team. They rarely take advantage of athletic LSMs and SSDMs to get the ball moving up field. They have been relying on the close defense throwing field-wide passes or trying to take on a one on one battle at mid field and failing miserably. Five missed clears and 16 turnovers kept St. John's in this game to the very end. Talent-wise these two teams are not close. But the failed clears directly led to three SJU goals.

The other areas the coaches will need to work on with the squad is shooting. The Hens got off 48 shots which is great. However, only 28 of those were on goal and only 12 got behind the goalie. 27% shooting will not get it done (team is 20% on the season which has to be the lowest % in D1). There were at least 10 shots inside of 10 yards that were not even close to being on goal. And many of the on-goal shots were stick-side high (so basically in the goalie's standing position without moving). Also too many forced shots. Seemed like the Hens often set their minds on shooting, and did so, despite not having a good look. Of the 12 goals 8 were assisted. That is a good thing. More of that please.

A couple players got real time today at midfield after Jason Kolar got hurt early in the game on a late hit to his head after scoring. Also, top shooting midfielder Hank D'Ambrogi (33%) did not play at all yesterday. That is really not good. Keegan Lathrop had two nice goals and Matt Triolo finally got his first goal.

Hens are going to struggle this year if they don't improve shooting and clearing. Defense played pretty well. DeLuca had them in a zone for a good part of the second half. Don't love that, but it forced SJU to shoot from farther out and Koff handled those shots easily.

That won't work against Penn this coming week. They have some real stretch shooters that can rake from 12-15 yards out. Hoffman, Scane and Provost will present problems at Franklin Field on Saturday. Hens will need to improve drastically to compete over the next four weeks (Penn, Villanova, Maryland and Richmond). Again, not to be negative but this is looking like a 1-6 start for this team. The good news is that only one of those losses will be in conference. Maybe the team will improve with each loss and finish the A10 schedule strong? We shall see.

Thanks, LILAX....good summary of our challenges.

We've played 3 games. Unfortunately, our Hens looked as though they were stepping onto the field for their first practice of the season. Sloppy ball handling (from dropped balls to ugly passes to...anybody?), poor decisions (the clearing clown show has been very frustrating going back to the scrimmage) and bad shooting. St. John's was awful and we managed to keep them in the game. Thought I heard (or maybe misheard) some stat that said they don't have a conference win in 8 years...is that possible). Their goalie did make a few nice saves, but as LILax mentioned, too many shots were aimed directly at him. The game was hard to watch from a fan standpoint with the poor quality of play, but the cameraman made it even worse...couldn't find the ball for a good portion of the game. The good news was that we won the FO battle 17-10...including an important 4-0 in the 4th (thank goodness).

In the meantime, Penn hung in against #5 Georgetown, losing 12-9 in a game that was closer than the final score. That game featured G'town's Rory Conner in a ghillie suit or some new personal cloaking technology. Whatever it was, Penn defenders couldn't find him, even though he spent most of his time just to the right of the goal, and he managed to score 7 goals on 9 shots along with a pretty assist. His brother, Liam, talied 5 assists. Those two came in as a pair of portal transfers from Colgate. The announcers were pretty good.

Utah looked good against Denver, losing 8-7 after being blanked 2-0 in the 4th. That was a good game to watch.

Drexel outscored UMBC 7-1 in the 4Q to win 15-8.

Lehigh, our scrimmage partner, is 2-1 with an OT loss to Fairfield, but they just beat #19 Michigan 14-13 in Michigan.

nova beat #7 Penn State 14-13 in OT last week, but lost 9-11 to our conference mate St. Joe's this weekend. Didn't watch either of those games, but the Wildkitties are our next home opponent on the 28th.

#1 Maryland lost to #2 Syracuse 11-9 at Syracuse.

#8 Richmond beat #13 Virginia 18-12 and are sitting 2-0 (trampled Robert Morris 17-7 last week). Their opening game with Maryland was postponed. Darned shame that we play the Spiders fairly early.

Got to get better.
