Mens recruiting

Post by DaveB »

Obviously, the big news is the FB programs move to FBS but I wonder if this will have a postive or negative effect on the men's program

Conf USA IMO is a stronger conference than the CAA but not by much. Less weaker teams but maybe not much better at the top although Liberty is pretty good. Still 1 bid so I think back to Breys attitude towards UD joining the CAA and how he was against it.

UTEP has the highest hoop budget at $4.3 mil followed by W Kentucky at $3.5. Liberty at $3.4 and MTSU/NMSU at $3. UD last I saw was at $2.785.

I am for the move and look forward to playing Liberty and some programs that historically have been very solid in W Kentucky, La Tech, UTEP, MTSU and New Mexico St.

The recruiting will need to see an uptick IMO

Conference USA is significantly stronger than the current version of the CAA. 10 or 15 years ago that wasn’t the case when we had teams like VCU, George Mason and ODU. Now the CAA is weaker than the America East. We will have to get better basketball recruits if we want to compete in Conference USA, and my assumption is the University is committed to doing just that.

The ESPN / ESPN+ stage is bigger (and more well known), than the FloSports / CBS Sports platform. Hopefully that helps land a roster upgrades.

I agree, our recruiting budget probably needs looking at too, but I think the first change we will see is taking advantage of the change in assistants allowed (from 3 to 5) to help boost recruitment. You'll probably see more dedicated recruiting and scout assistants.

IE: Previously D1 basketball was allowed a head coach, 3-assistants, 1-business coach & 1-grad assistant. Now 5-assistants are allowed.

I think Dan Issel was a Western Kentucky product.
