What is the rule on the coin toss? If you win the toss what decisions do you get to make - receive or defend? Defer? Which goal to defend?

I looked up the rule:

The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options:

To designate which team shall kick off.

To designate which goal line his team shall defend.

To defer his selection to the second half.

The opponent shall then choose option 1 or 2 above, as available.

If the winner of the toss chooses option 3 above, then after the opponent’s choice the winner selects the available option (1 or 2 above).

So UD picked option 3 to defer, then UNH picked option 1 to receive and then UD decided to not take the wind. Most of you probably understood this but I had to work thru it.

Good stuff.

Just don't choose to kick, because then the opposing team will get the ball to start the second half too.

In 2000 at Hofstra the Hens received the first half and second half kickoffs (44-14 Hens win). Tubby made a crack about Gardi at the following week's media luncheon when asked about it.

This was also the game Cummings passed, rushed and caught a TD.

Let’s clarify a little further. Basically, the choice of options continues to rotate:

The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options:

To designate which team shall kick off.

To designate which goal line his team shall defend.

To defer his selection to the second half.

The opponent shall then choose option 1 or 2 above, as available.

If the winner of the toss chooses option 3 above, then after the opponent’s choice the winner selects the available option (1 or 2 above).

For the second half the loser of the toss, or the winner who chooses option 3 above, shall choose option 1 or 2 above. The opponent then chooses the remaining available option.

So, we chose to defer, UNH chose to receive. Then we chose to receive for the second half, so UNH must have chosen to defend the south goal line so that they would have the wind in the 4th quarter. If I understand the rule correctly, that is why we received AND had the wind to start the 3rd quarter.

Thanks Rich. Good job as usual. I will add that many wondered about the QB position in the pre-season. Well, we have a QB don't we...

He's coming along for sure. Amazing what a little patience and good coaching can do. :D

Correct. So in hindsight, kicking into the wind may not have been the worst call depending on how you look at it. If we kicked with the wind to start, UNH would have had the wind in the second and third quarters, instead we had the wind those quarters and scored all of our points. Who knows?!?!? At the end of the day, the defense showed up and didn't let up any points in the second half, that's all that matters to me.

Curious that it wasn't squibbed.

The whole kicking/punting game seems a bit off right now. Hopefully they focus on it during the bye week. They take a time out prior to punting and it still gets blocked? 😲

Thanks Rich. I always enjoy your input.

Now for the nitpicking.....

I noticed Ryan is still super adamant about injury discussions . You, Kevin , Dan and others always get the same negative growl when you inquire but it's part of the job to do so.
