Was Henderson a Top 5 Hens QB of all-time?

Poll ended at Wed Apr 26, 2023 10:25 am

-- Yes, of course. Local kid makes good. Just look at the numbers. Heart, determination, skill, had to run for his life half the time to make plays. And as good as he was, think if he had been handled properly at the start of his career or had a little more help on his side of the ball. We will definitely feel the impact of his departure for years to come.

-- Definitely in the top 10, but can be convinced to go even higher. Impressive statistics, yes. Great leader, of course. I wish we had a QB with his skills on some Hens teams of the past. He may have been the difference between playoffs/no playoffs or perhaps a title. Will be missed in 2023.
22
30%
-- No, clearly, but top 15 for sure. To me, reaching a national title game is key to making the upper, upper echelon. Definitely made us a better team/program but he's not on Delaware's Mount Rushmore of QBs to me. Wish he had had last year's weapons throughout his career.

55%
-- No, and not close. Great kid, thanks for everything, but was always slightly overrated because of his First State ties. A player with his speed should dominate with his legs like some of our great QBs of the past. Seemed like there was always something missing. Wish him well in the future but comparing stats of 2020 QBs and 1970s/1980s QBs is a fool's errand.

Nobody's lists are going to be the same with all the potential variables. What did we see from the QB, what were our expectations, how many times did we actually see the kid play, leadership aspects, his potential filled, team accomplishments and simply how much fun and enjoyment did each of us get with the QBs. My favorite player maybe of all time is Bill Vergantino and there's many reasons why. As SEC J said, Dale Fry could have been one of the top QBs we've ever had if not injured. Bottom line is we've had some really good QBs at Delaware and here's hoping we have another one ready to break out this year.

I can't put Henderson in the top 10. Might have gotten there if it weren't for the injuries and his inconsistent senior season...and might have gotten there with a better OL and better Head Coach and better OC for his first couple years. Might, might, might.

I don't know what is was, but his senior year was a let down. He missed too many open receivers (not all those misses were due to actual pressure, but perhaps he was hearing footsteps and felt rushed due to past experience), missed obvious opportunities to run for first downs, and couldn't seem to make those long, accurate passes on a consistent basis. The first two were mental issues. But, the guy was fun to watch at most times and he was a competitor and leader who never trashed his OL...he just kept going out there knowing he was going to have to run for his life.

Good memories with Henderson.

Agree. Hard to say top 10 due to injuries and limited games.

Glad to see you include Riccio in that group. I think he was a pretty darn good QB but, for some reason, has gotten a bad rap by many. Henderson could have really elevated in his last year except for his reluctance to run a good part of the time. He showed how he could impact the game in play against UR.

I think you almost have to divide the lists into wing-T qbs, then after 2001 qbs in a totally different offensive system. I remember my hens experience started with Billy Zwann and the 1974 team, so I can only rank the Qbs that I actually saw play.
Wing-T qbs
1. Gannon
2. Vergantino
3. Scully
4. Nagy
5. Hamlett
6. Brunner
7. Komlo
8. Fry
Post 2001 Qbs
1. Flacco
2. Hall
3. Devlin
4. Henderson
5. Riccio
6. Hurley

We just might find out in 2023 how good Henderson was, check out the FCS National QB stats for 2022…(Some really good QBs too) Henderson was top 10 in TD passes and passing yards and I get what people are saying about he was hesitant to run the ball up field but he did start every game I believe….keeping him suited up and under center was critical and they managed to do that.

Ryan Carty had an all World FCS QB at Sam Houston, an explosive runner and he ran a lot, like Henderson he wasn’t a big kid and because he took so many big hits over the years he opted out of his final year… good move for his long term health. Maybe Carty learned something with that

Big National numbers for the skinny fast kid from Smyrna that many said would not cut it at Delaware
recruiting recruiting recruiting...It ain't rocket science....We need better more athletic players...That simple....

The kid was the best QB Delaware had during his tenure by a long shot, and that's all that really matters. Trying to compare him to anyone else is an absolutely pointless exercise. I loved rooting for a homegrown Delaware player, especially one that laid it all on the line every time he suited up.

I like that list. I would swap Vergantino and Gannon, but I loved both of them and can certainly see why they could flip flop. I would also find a way to get Scully into the mix there as well.

Henderson for me was a very good QB, but UD's had some really great ones as the list makes clear. Maybe top 15, certainly top 20, and that's not too shabby for a super-competitive position at UD over the years.

Earlier in his career Noland had a problem staying in the pocket long enough to find the open receiver. It was simply a case of him owning the field in HS and he could afford the luxury of moving about as he chose. It was not poor coaching at UD or lack of talent just a style that had to be adjusted at the next level. He was always a game changer and certainly one of the all time Blue Hen QB's. One tough and talented competitor , most people didn't understand that his multiple injuries were downplayed by the staff this past season and he was indeed restricted.

My opinion has always been that the GOAT QB was Gannon by a landslide but we fans have been very fortunate to experience a group of others who have given us some super exciting seasons. Henderson is in that select group. Rank him as you wish, ....he was special !

Hard to argue Gannon HZ. I've never seen anything like him at UD. I remember watching him play (or waste) a season on the '83 Freshmen team while our varsity QBs suffered that Year in a losing season

Devlin would be higher on a lot of list if (he whom shall not be named) catches that damn ball at on their second to last drive in the 2010 championship game. God that one hurt.

As for Henderson great kid great career and I wish him the best but UD has pumped out some really good QB's over the years. Borderline top ten definitely top 15 but nope on top 5.

I would have loved to see him come back and break every passing record UD ever had but I understand his decision. It's a shame he was stuck in a Rocco based offense most of his career as I think the number of weapons we have on this team with another year in the system would have been a sight to be hold. I think he has NFL talent, I really do and aside from Gannon, Flacco, and maybe Brunner, he would be my guy. No disrespect at all to the other QB's but if you think Henderson couldn't run Tubby's Wing-T at the highest level possible then I don't know what to tell you.

IMO he is one of the best QB's to ever play here and only his character and toughness exceeded his talent. Fell very fortunate to have had the chance to watch him play and I can't wait to see what camp he lands in because that back-up QB will be in a dog fight for sure.

Doubt that you'll see him in the QB spot in the NFL. He has been working out as a WR since the season ended.
