TV Viewership

Post by Info Hound »

Found this on the CUSA message board:

"Delaware was just ranked by medium.com as the 6th largest G6 school in terms of TV ratings."

Interesting. Having 5 nationally televized games certainly helped. Not too surprised that we are in the top ten of viewership for G5 schools. UD is a pretty big G5 School and our alumni base is capable of doing better than the 307k viewers we averaged last season. Don't know how much of a factor that viewership would be going forward as realignments continue.

This is surprising to me on one hand because I'm guilty as any First Stater of suffering the bigotry of low expectations. On the other hand, I shouldn't be surprised at all given UD's physical location and the center of our alumni base, which happens to be in one of the most densely populated regions of the country. The potential to reach eyeballs and earballs with a higher profile I-A football program was one element I tried hammering home with friends, administrators, and anyone within earshot since the late '70s, though, to be honest, I wasn't entirely sure how the concept would work out practically.

This factoid and the idea from Mr. Skolnick that applications are up from within the CUSA footprint, just goes to show why the marriage between UD and CUSA was mutually beneficial. There's little limit to what UD can do, but we've got to keep winning, to continue to gain mo' on the field and off, and growing the brand. There's no room for slip ups.

The bottom 3 on the list

129 Liberty — 5.6K
130 UTEP — 4.2K
131 Western Kentucky — 3.9K

Seems really low and not sure where he’s getting those numbers

Not directly TV viewership talk, per se, but watch this video featuring Dennis Dodd about the Cody Campbell proposal for a 24-team FBS playoff. The SEC and Big Ten don't like it, but Campbell has the ear of POTUS. Given his wildcard style, who's to say he wouldn't issue an executive order or put pressure on the big schools to get it done? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkAQesraziU

This article is related and interesting: https://frontofficesports.com/big-ten-s ... -tv-deals/

A lot of unknowns in big-time college football. Happy the Blue Hens are positioned where we are right now, compared with just a few years ago.

Not sure what to make of that either, CH.

I'm sure that our game in Boulder on FOX brought the average way up. Also didn't JS say that our WKU game was the highest viewed CUSA Weekday?

Good point on the Colorado game

Delaware at Colorado had 2.69 million viewers which would of taken ole Flo 90 years to get that many views

It will be interesting to compare UD's TV viewership ranking in 2026 to 2025 as well as the opponents played. UD's 2025 viewership ranking may also have had something to do with UD's novelty as 1st year in FBS.

Just an FYI, these numbers are pretty worthless for most non-P4 games.

"The numbers next to each school indicate the average number of viewers per week for a 12-week season.

Streaming numbers are included if available. Games with no available data are counted as zero."

Numbers are skewed low since we get zero's for all streaming ESPN games. So JMU gets a zero for 5 games, which obviously isn't the case. Same for UD's 6 ESPN+ games.

Additionally, if you have one "big" game on National TV, it is going to skew your totals.
