The state of college basketball

Post by 72 Hen »

When John Calipari was introduced as the new Arkansas basketball coach he had an interestion comment. He met with the team but there is no team.

"I'm jacked about this new opportunity," Calipari said. "Now, I met with the team. There is no team. So now, I've got to—[Arkansas athletic director] Hunter [Yurachek] is extremely confident, but we've got to get a roster together. But we will."

One player remained on the team from 2023. he averaged .03 points per game.

Great find, 72…and a dose of reality.

This is the new norm.

One other interesting basketball related things recently was the UConn coach saying, repeatedly, that he appreciated all of the support from UConn that allowed him to win the championship. He said he had all sorts of pro talent on his team, but they sacrificed everything for the team…but it was UConn’s support that allowed him to keep it together.

Plenty of ways to read that, but to me, that meant there was a lot of NIL money around to keep some of his guys from going pro early or transferring to other teams to be The Man.

The women’s final outdrew the men. The men’s final is on TNT/TBS. The one and done combined with the portal have turned millions away….

March Madness was once the goose that layed the golden egg. The portal, nba one-n-dones, and the continued freezing out of mid-majors in favor of 9th place P5 teams, have all beaten the goose to a pulp. Greed kills.

Maybe this is the seed that will get women's basketball going. The rot does not seem as bad there yet.

He also play the men’s game on a Monday night play the Flippin thing on the weekend or earlier than 9:20pm Eastern. . I know it’s been this way so the final four could be on Saturday but 9:20 PM start on the East Coast on a Monday that’s tough.

I agree they need to re-evaluate. They can play Monday but start at 8 eastern

True.

Hard for some to watch a game that begins after 9pm Eastern.

There is no federal holiday for the day after the NCAA basketball championship.

Totally agree on the late start time is no fun. Monday night football moved their kickoff from 9pm to 8:15 a number of years back. Hoping the NCAA follows a similar start time.
