One question I have, and I know next to nothing about marching band, instruments, etc. But why when the band does actually play during the game does it have to be piped in over the speakers? Aren’t they loud enough just to be heard throughout the stadium without needing to be piped in? Go to any FBS game and the marching band, which is playing a lot more than ours does, is not being piped in over the speakers. Sometimes there’s a delay between hearing the band and what’s being piped in over the speakers, and it just sounds stupid.

I agree it sounds like crud, but I think it stems from you can’t hear them on the ends of the sides of the stands because they sit in the endzone and their sound essentially goes right out of the end of the stadium due to it being open on the other end. Close it in and it will sound a whole lot better. You can hear the band best standing out by the practice fields during the game because the sound goes out of the end of the standium.

I think mic'ing the band is fairly common actually. There are always microphones in front of bands in the bigger stadiums.

Eh, maybe. Been to now Penn State, Va Tech, Pitt and Rutgers the past few years and none of them had it. 2005 makes a good point, I guess it’s where they sit? I don’t know, just sounds stupid at times. Just my opinion.

I thought Penn State was mic'd when I was there.

Don’t think so. It’s a minor quip, and like I said I know next to nothing about marching bands. Just have never heard it with the big boys, and even Del State doesn’t need it when they come to UD and they’re heard just fine. Just sounds minor league to me when it’s on a bit of a delay over the speaker.

Penn state was definitely mic’d for the Delaware game this past September.
UD to FBS. I never thought I’d see the day

It’s a stupid debate, and certainly not one I ever thought I’d get in, but don’t believe you’re correct. If they did it was minimal. Only say this because they played at one point while UD was on offense for a few plays, which yes was minimal in itself, and I thought it was odd. And they definitely weren’t piping that over the speaker. Had only ever seen a band playing for a period of plays with Del State.

Like I said, it’s a silly nitpick on my part. I don’t lose a second of sleep over it. But the other marching bands I’ve heard appear loud enough to not have to be piped in over a speaker.

Until the administration turns their head to game day student tailgating like what's done at most major universities, nothing will change.

I'll host a tailgate at Kennesaw State whenever we play down here.

Saw this on x….just something to think about would UD be willing to do the same. Liberty has definitely made it attractive for their fans and students to go the games. Hopefully they won’t be out of c-USA before we even get there ….

Liberty SGA has announced that they’ll be partnering with Athletics to provide 250 students with partial travel vouchers for the Fiesta Bowl! This is incredibly helpful for many students, I want to give a huge thank you to @dhost_etter for helping advocate behind the scenes!

Just keep in mind that Liberty University was hatched by Jerry Falwell the same year I was born (1971) and already has an endowment the size of Delaware's (both in the $1.7B range) in just half a century of existence.

The collection plate and the online offerings have Liberty swimming in funds, and growing at a much faster rate than Delaware. They're also fully private and not subject to some of the strings that the State can pull on UD.

For those on UD’s email list, be sure to complete the football game day experience survey that was sent out this morning. I gave it a thoughtful 15 minutes.
