FAVORITE BLUEHENS ALL TIME- Top 10

Post by HENJOHN » Tue Jul 28, 2020 3:52 pm

We all have different reasons for liking players whether its effort, flash, toughness, productivity etc and some of us have been fans a Long time and some for a lesser time. My brother asked me this past weekend who my Favorite players were knowing that I have been going to the UD games since the 1968 opener as a kid and have been to over 300 games overall Home & Away. So the list I have may go back a little further but thought in this Slow period of sports activity if some felt like sharing their favorites. Here are my TOP 10 and it doesnt mean they were the Best overall, just my favorites for several reasons. (Sorry Ralph and Jeff, you guys just missed the cut)

1) Dennis Johnson (DL 70s)
2) Eddie Conti (WR 90s)
3) Omar Cuff (RB 2000's)
4) Bill Vergantino (QB 80s-90s)
5) Garry Kuhlman (OT 70s-80s)
6) Lou Mariani (RB, KR, 70s)
7) Sidney Haughabrook (DB, KR 2000s)
#8) Darrell Booker (LB 80s)
9) Kenny Bailey (DB 90s)
10) Joe Carbone (DE 70s)

Hon Mention- R Gannon, G Kahoe, T DiMuzio, B Pietuszka, M Morrill, Andy Hall, Mike Bandish

Great thread, I like trying to make a list.

Mine is very offensive-centric and very QB heavy. Been going to games my whole life, but I'm still under 50 so I'm a youngin' compared to most everyone here. First real memory of a UD QB was Rick Scully so anything before that was just bits and pieces of a young kid watching so I probably liked the mascot more than the football back then.

1) Rich Gannon (QB 80's)
2) Bill Vergantino (QB 80's-90's)
3) Eddie Conti (WR 90's)
4) Omar Cuff (RB 00's)
5) Joe Flacco (QB 00's)
6) Lanue Johnson (RB 90's)
7) Matt Nagy (QB 90's-00's)
8 ) Shawn Johnson (DE '03)
9) Craig Cummings (RB 90's-00's)
10) Mike Adams (DB '00's)

People lose track of him since he was in the backfield with Vergantino and Brownie, but he might very well have been the best pass catching RB we've ever had at UD. Played on some great teams and in some really big games. If Vergantino could've gotten that option toss off cleanly in OT in the '91 playoff game (not his fault, good pressure on the play) against JMU Lanue was in prime position to score on that 4th and goal.

On my favorite #29 player on Big Rs thread, I posted that I think he's one of the most under rated UD players ever.

Shawn Johnson was a monster in 2003 and should not be denied.
Mondoe Davis because of the mystique with the crowd calling his name when he made plays.
Andy Hall for being such a gritty competitor and winning the NC.
Omar Cuff - I have a genuine helmet with his autograph. He was a lot of fun to watch.
David Boler was a great WR.
Hugh Dougherty because lots of family always tailgated together to watched him play. Many memories for my dad and his family including Doughertys. And my wife and I were students living off campus across from the stadium at South Gate Garden Apts at the time.
Many special QBs
And, not a player, but Tubby Raymond - of course.

Gannon was the best player I ever saw play for UD period. . No other QB came close to controlling the game like he did.

Same with Conti, super exciting and nobody could cover him one on one.

Ditto for Booker. Just dominated the entire field from his LB position.

Dennis Johnson, DT was just unstoppable. That simple.

Conway Hayman , OL completes my top 5.

Many others were certainly special but when you start your all time best entries, these guys are etched in stone .

gotta throw in Conway Hayman(RIP), Joe Purzyki(sp?), Herb Slattery. Mike Brown, Ivory Sully, Jamin Elliot. I guess my additions reflect my age.
I haven't researched any of the players from the past. I'm sure I would add some others if I did.
I played a lot of bball with the first three guys. It was great to have their size on my side of the court

hope all of you are safe!

In no particular order...

Flacco - only player I'd go to watch throw in practice
Gannon - magician, always gave us a chance in any game
Booker - best defensive player I've seen at UD
Sully - one of my early heroes from the 70's
Schmitt - the season (1982) when he had 13 ints was special
Conti - most exciting player in Blue Hen history
Worrilow - always in the right spot, could play any LB position well
Troy Reeder - local great on and off the field
Haugabrook - exceptional cover corner and explosive as a return man
Vergantino - perfect QB for the Wing-T

So true about Flacco, we always went into the stadium early to watch him warm up. Amazing arm.

Funny - I was thinking about putting down KC Knobloch as he was the first kicker I remember, but I worried that some folks wouldn't get past the first two letters before firing off an angry reply!

The one special teams guy I would through in there would be Tim Healy (spelled right?) - the fullback who also punted. He punted in the '80's but he looked just as good as the past one or two punters we've had who have been some of the best punters we've ever had. The fact that Healy was booting the ball like that back in the day was impressive, as well as his ability to be a meaningful starter on offense.
