UD to cut Sports?

Post by hens4life » Thu May 28, 2020 9:12 am

Doesn't sound good! What sports are on the chopping block?
“How do we make this situation one where we come out stronger, that we come out in a way that we are smarter, we’re thriving?” Rawak said of her approach.

Rawak recently said “there’s no way we’re going to avoid budget cuts” in athletics at UD, though it was too soon to decipher where the trimming may occur.

NOT at all at the cuts - just surprised that it's in writing...

My guess is Men's Swimming & Diving & Tennis. NO Idea on the women's
side as I have NO idea how Title IX will impact the cuts.

Fcs d1 min 14 teams 6 mens. UD can only cut 2 mens teams. Mens soccer & tennis are gone. Not that much savings in cutting swimming. The pool isn't going anywhere & the swim teams share coaches. Doubt they can do anything with female teams. Most UD students are female. Can cut wbb expenses biggest money pit in college sports. 3 asst coaches & 2 director of BB operations.

Didn't mens soccer receive a fairly large donation recently? Towards the stadium or maybe it was for both mens and womens soccer.

Stuart & Susan Grant made the donation to remodel the soccer stadium & build the press box.

IMO they will wait to make the draconian step of cutting sports for financial reasons and see if other cost savings get them to where they need to be. If the total expected shortfall is shared equally, athletics would be required to cut about $3.5m; that’s back to 2017 or 2018 spending levels.

Any Title IX inequalities are a separate issue.

Not a PC comment to follow but I wonder if Title IX should be amended to exempt football for the following reasons:

1) Reduces men's participation in other non revenue sports. Crazy that we can't have mens track and cross country - the world's original sports
2) Provides revenue to all other teams.

So exempt football and then apply the Title IX formulas.

Expenses for Traveling should be the first cut. Scheduling would be up there also.

Why can’t they just reach into their $1.466 BILLION endowment?

They need to press for new conference alignment so it can be a bus conference as Mickey M suggested in his op ed.

Yes sir. Agree 100% with you.

Solves two possible issues -- traveling and scheduling. Or is that one issue? :D

a) what makes you think it's still worth that much?

b) endowed money comes with earmarks, ie: the donor gave the money for the express purpose of say a football scholarship. That football scholarship can be used for a football scholarship, not for a engineering scholarship or remodeling a building or to retain a professor.

c) diverting endowment money for purposes not intended for the donor is the fastest was to end future donations.
