Pro Day - GH field level report

Following are some general observations from UD’s Pro Day, as well as summaries of some conversations I had with several people. I also interviewed a number of players and will provide those in a follow-up post.

Upon arrival and check in, all media reps were given a list of planned participants as well as a packet that contained a “2019 NFL Pro Timing Day Questionnaire” filled out by every participant who was actually present. The names on the list and packets are shown below.

UD
Jamie Jarmon – no info packet – did not participate
Vinny Papale
Joe Walker
Andrew Verboys
Charles Scarf
Kani Kane
Kareem Williams
Noah Beh
Troy Reeder
Ray Jones
Nasir Adderley
Malcolm Brown
Tenny Adewusi
KC Hinton
Frank Raggo – no info packet – did not participate
Anthony Jackson
Aaron Donaldson (Sacred Heart, Graduated from Delaware)
Thomas Jefferson (name not on list, but he did fill out a questionnaire and participate)

Visiting Athletes
Delane Hart-Johnson (New Mexico) WR
Brycen Alleyne (DSU) RB
Taronn Selby (DSU) WR
Keyjuan Selby (DSU) DB
Freddy Canteen (Michigan/Notre Dame/Tulane) WR
Sean Smith (Dayton) P
Chris Laviano (Rutgers / LIU Post) QB
Alex Kemp (Wesley) WR
Khaalik Brroughs (Wesley) QB
DJ McFadden (New Mexico Highlands) WR
Jason Smith (DSU) DL (name not on list, but he did fill out a questionnaire and participate)

When I arrived, at 8:30, the vertical jump drills were already under way. By now, most everyone has heard that Nasir Adderley jumped 38” and Troy Reeder jumped 37.5”, which were the two best performances of the day.

I saw a number of ex-Blue Hens milling around and watching the proceedings, including: Bilal Nichols, Blaine Woodson, Gino Gradkowski, Travis Hawkins, Patrick Callaway (scout for Tennessee Titans), and Wes Hills. I’m sure there were a number of others there as well. Of course, a number of coaches from UD’s current staff were also on hand.

Bench press testing was also taking place, but out of sight. Shortly after these were done, everyone moved over to the field house for the rest of the drills.

At the field house, I had a chance to speak with Coach Stewart, and I asked how the winter workouts had gone, and who, in addition to Colby Reeder, would he say really impressed him. He said well, yeah, of course, Colby, but then, without hesitation, the next name he threw out there was Johnny Buchanan, mentioning his strength in particular. He also named Kedrick Whitehead, Justis Henley, and Nolan Henderson (especially his speed). We talked about how Henderson would probably be at an FBS school if he was an inch taller and somewhat heavier (he walked onto campus weighing 168 lbs.). Coach Stu said that Nolan has put on some weight and the goal is to keep him above 180 lbs (he was slightly above 180 during winter workouts and has maintained that weight). Coach said the issue with Nolan is that he has such a high metabolism, it’s just tough to put on weight and keep it on – “he may never get above 188 to 190 lbs”. The hope is that he’ll be around 185 when the season rolls around.
When I asked about Anthony Paoletti, he said that Anthony has good upper body strength and, in terms of playing style (not performance, but HOW he plays), he would place him between Henderson and Kehoe.
I mentioned that Charles Scarff was noticeably thinner and Coach Stu said he’s lost about 20 lbs since the end of the season.
He absolutely loves the makeup of the current coaching staff and the new additions. He said that the QB’s are really taking to Coach Ambrose’s coaching. He also likes the range of ages that adds a great dynamic to the team – from Coach Cubit to Coach Copeland, and he mentioned how well Coach Copeland has fit right in. He said the fast pace of practices is really noticeable.

The schedule with the Tampa Bay Bucs broke just right for Coach Rapone to come up to visit his family and attend Pro Day and he seemed to be really enjoying himself.

I had a nice conversation with Coach Brock, who, like Coach Rapone, was not there as a scout, per se. We talked about the Falcons, and also about what “The League” looks for in players coming out of college. In particular (and as Joe C says), speed is the key – especially for DB’s. He said you can’t believe how fast most of the pro WR’s are.
The most important thing for a college player who is not “elite” to have a chance to make a roster, is finding the right fit. So, even though speed is important for a DB to keep up with WR’s, it’s even more important in a scheme like the Baltimore Ravens play where the DB’s are almost always playing press coverage and line up right in the face of the opposing receiver.
I asked about Troy Reeder and he said the same thing applies for Troy – the right fit will be critical. He’s probably perceived more as an inside LB in a “base” defense, so teams that tend to play that style a greater percentage of the game may have a greater interest (this was before Troy ran his 40 and shuttle, which may have changed some perceptions). He also said something that made a significant impression on me – “Once Troy gets into someone’s camp, he will be extremely hard for a team to cut because of his combination of ability, intelligence, work ethic, personality, “clubhouse presence”, etc. He’s just the kind of player and person most clubs would want to have on their team. If he and another guy are close, and the other guy has only slightly better numbers, all the intangibles would lean towards Troy.”

When I interviewed Vinny Papale, his mom and dad were standing there, so I asked Vince how he thought Vinny did. He thought he did really well, except that he got disqualified for the shuttle. I asked how that happened and he said, in all seriousness, that one scout said he left too early, but “the guy was from the (team name withheld) and they have a problem with anyone named Papale”. I don’t want to post the name of that team because you never know if they might have an interest in working Vinny out.

After the drills were over, I saw one scout working out Tenny one-on-one, so hopefully, that is a good sign.

Thanks, Rich...great stuff. Question for you...any chance Coach Rocco would be up for a GoHens night the way we did with Coach Brock?

Buck getting a lot of love from Draft Diamonds. It’ll be interesting to see if he makes a camp. He’s one of those athletes that if he gets his foot in the door it’ll be hard to cut him. Hope he gets that chance.

Troy Reeder: This is interesting. I happened to be sitting next to his HS football coach during the Cornell game (what a great guy) and he basically predicted that Troy would destroy his Pro-Day and get a ton of attention. Good call.

Question Big R - who was throwing the ball as QB for WR, TE and RB work outs?

Can't say the same for Buck, but hopefully I'm wrong about that. Regardless, with all the talent we've had on defense these past 2 years, hard to believe they weren't more dominating at the FCS level. Style of play was much too conservative defensively. I know a lot of the "bend but don't break" approach was due to a lack of confidence in our offense to put up points, but still...[/quote]

Buck is a gamer who is still raw, but his potential might influence the scouts/coaches/gms. He would be a rocket man on special teams since he is fearless.
He can handle several D positions. If the chips fall right, he might get the nod for the practice squad over others for his unlimited desire to catch on in the NFL with whatever it takes to succeed. The system he had to perform under, didn't allow him to progress further in the defensive backfield. Lb is not going to be his position, though he gave it his all.

You can't help but love what Ray has given UD football over the years.
I wish him the best in football/career choice/life.
Keep the faith kick butt go Hens
