With his offensive performance it just might be better if he keeps his hands the 'he!! off'. He needs to hire a successful, or at least, innovative OC. If he hires one of his RU assistants as OC, I'll tune in to Roller Derby on Saturdays and root for my gal 'Spike'.
I actually don't want to see the head coach repeatedly interacting with the players during the game

He can and should be in on the conversations but head coaches shouldn't be huddled up on the sidelines going over blocking schemes with the offensive line. This job is bigger than that and this guy needs to be able to see the big picture and make sure he has people in place to do the other things. If he wants to directly handle or be involved in the play calling that's fine, but as for the "teachable moments" during the game if he's doing that then we're in trouble.

how bout just putting him in a cage over on the other side of the field - say like in Keelers corner, K.C might have well just coached from over there

CH, KC ,as well as Tubby, are ancient history and have no bearing on this decision which needs to stand on it's own merits.
If the hire in and of itself is acceptable then so be it but leave KC, Tubby and Dave out of it.
